"Ike" was the second Nimitz-class carrier in the US fleet, having been christened in 1977 by Mrs. Eisenhower in memory of her deceased husband. Ike had several deployments, including participation in Operation Desert Storm responding to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1991 and in Operation Uphold Democracy off the coast of Haiti in 1994. Sailing into numerous ports on the Mediterranean and Red Seas over the last few years, Ike is still on active duty today.
