The BMP-1 was designed primarily to enhance troop combat mobility and offer armor protection to infantrymen fighting with tank support. Later the BMP-1 was upgraded to the BMP-3 with a 30mm automatic gun, a 100mm gun with moderate ballistics and a 7.62mm machine gun and various other high-tech and navigational devices. The BMP-3 became one of most feared combat vehicles in the Soviet arsenal.
