Description
The USS The Sullivans is a World War II Fletcher class destroyer. She was commissioned September 30, 1943. Fletcher class destroyers were flush deckers with two funnels and five 5-inch guns. They were larger in size than any previous class of destroyers and when fully loaded carried the fuel, ammunition, and stores needed for extensive sea duty in the Pacific. They had 10 torpedo tubes in two quintuple banks, depth charges, and large batteries of antiaircraft guns. The Sullivans is named to honor five brothers from Waterloo, Iowa who served together on the USS Juneau during World War II. The Sullivan brothers lost their lives at Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942 when the Juneau was sunk. The tragedy left their parents childless. They were adamant about serving together in spite of the Navy wartime policy to separate family members. Kit consists of 174 parts on 12 sprues plus lower and upper hulls, waterline plate and display stand. Markings are for 1943 Measure 21 and 1945 Measure 22. Completed kit is nearly 13" long
